Cedar Shake Vs. Asphalt Shingle Roofs

Asphalt shingles and cedar shakes are two popular roofing options. While both can create a beautiful, long-lasting roof, your budget and aesthetic preference will determine the best choice for your home. Here are some things to consider before choosing either option.

Cedar Shake

A cedar shake roof is favored by those who want a traditional or rustic appearance for their house. Although a cedar shake roof is more expensive than the more common asphalt shingles, it also lasts longer and is better for the environment than most other roofing materials.

The average life span of a cedar shake roof is 30 to 40 years. This figure, however, is greatly affected by the quality of installation, cedar shake used and maintenance performed. Overhanging trees and climate also affect a cedar shake roof's longevity.

Applying a pressure-impregnated fire retardant to a cedar shake roof can protect it from fire, moss and mildew growth and will extend its longevity. The retardant is a particularly important additive for high-humidity. These additives prevent some regular maintenance requirements, but your cedar shake roof still requires some care. Remove any mold, mildew, or tree litter that is on the roof. Also, hire a professional to perform yearly checkups to identify any potential problems. Rotten patches can be replaced without damaging the rest of the roof.

Installing a cedar shake roof requires a professional. A good installer will properly place nails to prevent cupping and warping for a long-lasting cedar shake roof.

Asphalt Shingles

Asphalt shingles are the most common roofing material in the United States. The material is inexpensive, easy to install and requires little maintenance. However, asphalt shingles have a much shorter life span than cedar shake roofs.

There are very few things you can do to extend the life span of an asphalt shingle roof. It is maintenance-free, but it lasts only about 25 years. Asphalt shingles last longer in cold climates, but dynamic temperature shifts can reduce the life span of the roof. Proper attic ventilation can also extend the life of the product.

The forms of asphalt shingles - fiberglass and organic - are rated by weight. Organic shingles, made of asphalt-covered felt with bits of ceramic, often are preferred because their high-asphalt concentration makes them more durable. Fiberglass shingles are made of asphalt-coated fiber mat and mineral filler. The fiber mat is not waterproof, so it is bonded with a urea-formaldehyde resin and carefully recoated with asphalt. They were made to replace the older asbestos shingles, which were more durable but bad for the environment.

When installing asphalt shingles, a few rules must be observed. A traditional roofing nail - never staple guns - should be used on shingles. Asphalt shingles also should be applied in warm weather, which helps mold together the shingles. Never attempt to install asphalt shingles in cold weather.

A licensed professional should install your roofing, regardless of the material. A professional contractor will be able to recommend the appropriate material for your area and install it so you have an attractive, serviceable roof for years to come.
