Composite Decking Have you ever thought about what it would be like to spend time with your loved ones, barbequing and entertaining on your very own backyard deck? One of the greatest ways to expand your living space is to head outdoors, and with the advent of improved composite deck technology, it is becoming even easier and more cost effective to add this backyard feature. Unlike traditional decking material, which is primarily made from pressure treated lumber, composite decking is made from other plastic materials. These can range anywhere from propylene (a rigid plastic) or even environment friendly recycled milk jugs and soda bottles. If a plastic-esque look is a decking turnoff for you, never fear. Many composite decking manufacturers now have the technology to create composite decking pieces that have the appearance of real wood. Keep in mind composite materials themselves are not sturdy enough to hold the entire size and weight of a full deck. Thus, the undercarriage of your deck will still be made of pretreated lumber to add additional sturdiness.
The biggest reason homeowners often choose composite decking over traditional hardwood varieties is the ease in which the deck has to be maintained. Traditional deck styles often need to be re-stained and sealed on a frequent basis. Composite decking, however, lasts much longer with absolutely no refinishing. (Protection from mold and regular cleaning, however, is still required.) A few manufacturers even hype decking that will not fade in color, although it is assumed that in high heat and sunshine climates this claim will probably not hold up quite as well. And while many manufacturers are limited on the color options in which a homeowner can choose for their deck, many are coming up with new options that are sure to hit backyards in the near future and are all very visually pleasing. Quality decking and lack of maintenance does come at a price. Composite decking can cost about three times the price of generic pressure treated lumber. And few contractors like working with composite decking due to the fact lumber is much simpler to cut and build with. However, the most important detail for a homeowner to consider is the price over the long haul. Spending more now for a deck that will not require the costs of resealing, sanding, repainting, or maintaining truly saves you time and money later. And while some minor maintenance is still required, composite decking cleaners can be purchased to make the task less tedious. So, now you've decided you like the idea of a low-maintenance deck. What next? Call your local decking contractor and arrange a time to discuss your project. You will want to ask their general procedure on building an undercarriage for your new space. (Overall safety places an important key in the construction of your deck.) Also, discuss the design in which you have in mind. With a variety of caps and railing available for construction, many decking contractors can now complete many designs they couldn't even fathom in the past. Whether you are looking for a place to set a small table and chairs or a full gourmet outdoor kitchen with seating for twenty, composite decking is a very appropriate option. Because, who really wants to spend their precious time working on deck maintenance?
