Hiring a Pool Service Contractor

Pool maintenance can be a disheartening reality for many homeowners. Whether a homeowner has an existing pool or is thinking of investing in a pool for the home, pool maintenance is an essential, ongoing process that needs to be handled by a licensed pool service contractor. However, hiring a pool service contractor may not be as easy as it sounds.

Pools, hot tubs, and other water features enhance your outdoor space.

Pool service contractors offer a great range of pool support and maintenance for the homeowner. From the basic service package to a deluxe pool package, pool service contractors can cover every homeowner's pool-maintenance need, allowing the homeowner to sit back and relax while cleaning the pool.

Pool-service packages will generally include some basic services. These services should include weekly pool servicing. Weekly pool service should cover the following: cleaning; skimming; side brushing; vacuuming and backwashing of the filter; and chemical testing and addition. It also should include inspections of the cleaning systems; water level; hoses; baskets; screens; nets; filter; valves; plumbing; and all pool-related equipment.

It is important for the homeowner to advise the pool service contractor of any special chemical needs before maintenance begins. Special chemicals offered for sensitive skin and allergies will not be available to some pool service contractors and may need to be supplied by the homeowner. A good pool service contractor also will offer a weekly report showing troubles and necessary repairs. Chemical levels and additions also should be listed on this report.

Basic pool service needs are not the sole jobs of pool service contractors. Full-service options available to the homeowner should also include, leakage detection and repair, resurfacing and re-tiling, if needed. Pool service contractors will most often offer special summer packages and savings, which may cost more upfront but save homeowners money in the long run and keep the pool clean and healthy all summer.

It is important for the homeowner to hire only a licensed pool service contractor. Licensed pool contractors will offer license numbers and verification to the homeowner when asked. Homeowners should never proceed with a contract, or even a one-time cleaning, if the pool service contractor refuses licensing credentials.

Many licensed pool contractors also are members of the Independent Pool and Spa Service Association. The IPSSA offers information on its members, including experience levels, specialization training credentials and back-up service-technician listings. While not all licensed pool service contractors are members of this association, this is a great place to start a search for a licensed pool service contractor.

Homeowners will need to ask a licensed pool service contractor for information on insurance coverage. If damage were to occur to an in-ground pool worth $25,000, and the pool contractor only has $10,000 in insurance coverage, the homeowner will be out the pool and $15,000. Licensed pool service contractors generally offer more than enough insurance to cover the cost of pool replacement in case of emergency, but homeowners should always ask for amounts and verification of coverage.

Homeowners also should beware of pool service companies trying to force a homeowner into a contract. Many licensed pool service contractors will offer one-time cleanings. If the pool service company you have chosen will only agree to a contract, move on to the next.

Homeowners should never toil over the labor-intensive task of owning a pool. With the help of a licensed pool service contractor, and a great pool service package, homeowners will never again have to worry if the pool is staying clean and healthy.
