Asphalt Roofing

Most American homes have asphalt roofing. It is a beautiful selection that looks even better when stacked against its roofing competitors. Metal, tile, slate and wood are available to homeowners for roofing choices, but none has the style or versatility of asphalt roofing.

With four out of every five homes being roofed with asphalt roofing, it is no wonder more than 12.5 billion square feet of asphalt roofing is produced each year. With its wide array of colors, textures and styles, as well as great pricing and immense durability, asphalt is a choice with which a homeowner can't go wrong.

Asphalt roofing is manufactured as an organic- or fiberglass-based product. Organic asphalt roofing is made from a cellulose fiber base originating from recycled paper and wood fibers. The organic product is coated with an asphalt coating and weather-resistant minerals before being launched onto a homeowner's roof.

Fiberglass asphalt roofing, on the other hand, is created solely from glass fibers. After production, the fiberglass asphalt roofing will endure an asphalt and mineral coating as well.

Asphalt roofing is by far the most customizable roofing solution offered to homeowners. From the wide array of available colors, to textures and shapes manufactured to match virtually every known architectural style, asphalt roofing is the only roofing choice homeowners will need for a home roofing project.

In addition to the great beauty offered by asphalt roofing, the product is inexpensive and durable. Asphalt shingles are produced so efficiently and applied with such ease that it is hard for any other roofing selection to compete. Asphalt roofing will last up to 15 years before it will need to be replaced.

Asphalt roofing will withstand extreme heat, wind, water, snow and ice. It also is resistant to external fire and flame and is available in fire-resistant classes A (the highest) through C.

Asphalt roofing is available to the homeowner in three varieties. Strip shingles are three times longer than they are wide and are offered with a varying number of tabs, the three-tabbed shingles being the most common. Laminated shingles are the most common asphalt roofing used by homebuilders. The multiple layers of tabs offer a custom look on a roof and create a three-dimensional effect. Interlocking shingles are individual asphalt shingles that interlock to provide exceptional wind resistance.

While asphalt roofing generally will last a homeowner more than 15 years, early detection of roof damages is possible by viewing the roof from the ground with binoculars for cracked, curled or missing asphalt shingles. If a homeowner finds water damage in their attic, replacement asphalt roofing can be applied directly on the existing roofing without the hassle of shingle removal and disposal. Some communities will have regulations regarding the reapplication of asphalt roofing. Due to the weight of the roofing, eventually the shingles will need to be removed and replaced. This is also important for maintenance of eves and weight-bearing beams in older homes. Homeowners will need to check with local ordinances before stacking asphalt roofing.

Asphalt roofing is a beautiful, economical and popular choice for homeowners. The selection and customizable nature of asphalt roofing will continue to feed the thriving nature of this great product.
